Keynote speakers for the sustainability week 2022

Keynote speakers for Act Sustainable 2022 and the Act Sustainable Research Conference are set. In total five keynotes, two for Act Sustainable and three for Act Sustainable Research Conference. Together they outline this years´ theme Democracy in a Changing Climate from different perspectives and contribute to a complex whole with both width and depth. Act Sustainable take place on November 14-18 at Studenternas Hus for students, researchers and personal at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg.

The keynote speakers for Act Sustainable, Chalmers University of Technology’s and the University of Gothenburg’s shared sustainability week, are set. During the week a total of five keynotes will take the stage at Studenternas Hus. Two as part of the main program, and three as part of the Act Sustainable Research Conference. Together they will broaden and deepen our knowledge and understanding for this years´ theme Democracy in a Changing Climate from different perspectives and with their own expertise and experience.

Staffan I LIndberg - V-Dem Institute, and Gunilla Reischl - The Swedish Institute of International Affairs.

Staffan I Lindberg, V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg

The Act Sustainable week will open with the lecture Sustainable Futures? A Wave of Autocratization and Consequences for Sustainability from Staffan I Lindberg. Staffan is the founding director of Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) at the University of Gothenburg. V-Dem is a world leader in democracy research and yearly publish the report Democracy Report to, as objectively and correct as possible, describe the state of democracy in the world. Through Staffans lecture we´ll learn about the democratic development (or rather the decline…) in the world and the dividends of democracy and its contribution to sustainability.

Gunilla Reischl, The Swedish Institute of International Affairs

Gunilla Reischl is Head of Program of the Global Politics and Security Program at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI). Her research focus on environment and energy within the area’s global governance issues and international institutions. It encompasses issues of safety as well as environmental change, trade and climate negotiations. In addition, she is an alumni from Gothenburg with a masters degree in international relations from the School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg.

Keynote Speakers for Act Sustainable Research Conference

The Act Sustainable Research Conference is arranged as a part of the sustainability week, November 16-18, mainly for researchers and PhD-students. This years theme for the conference is Sustainability in times of declining democracy and increasing polarization: What knowledge and actions do we need?

Kwadwo Appigayei-Atua - University of Ghana, Karin Bäckström - Institute for Future Studies, and Ezra Clark - UNESCO.

Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, School of Law at the University of Ghana

Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua has, among other things, conducted research on how to build academic freedom and democracy in Africa. His areas of expertise are Public International Law, International Human Rights, and Law of Diplomacy and he has served as consultant for numerous intergovernmental organizations such as United Nations Drugs and Crime (UNODC). He is also a board member of the Global Observatory on Academic Freedom, based in Vienna.

Karin Bäckstrand, Institute for Futures Studies

Karin Bäckstrand is Professor in Environmental Social Science at the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University. She is also former member of the Swedish Climate Policy Council and Associate Senior at Center for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at Canberra University, Australia. At the Institute for Future Studies she is principal investigator for the project Transformative partnerships for sustainable development.

Ezra Clark, Division of Science Policy and Basic Science at UNESCO

Ezra Clark is Director ad interim of the Division of Science Policy and Basic Science at UNESCO and Chief of the Section of Science Technology and Innovation Policy, which is responsible for the UNESCO Open Science Recommendation. An initiative to promote shared values and principles between the UN member states on open access and open data to bring the citizens of the world closer to science and knowledge.

The sustainability week Act Sustainable

Act Sustainable is Chalmers University of Technology´s the University of Gothenburg´s shared sustainability week for students, researchers and personal at the universities. This year the week is November 14-18 at Studenternas Hus here in Gothenburg and this years theme is Democracie in a Changing Climate.
