World leader at bridging science and policy - what can universities learn from Stockholm Environment Institute, SEI? Johan Kuylenstierna, Executive Director for SEI, and new board member of the University of Gothenburg, shares his view of how universities and researchers can expand the policy impact of their work.
How can a scientist influence policymakers in competition with all the other societal actors? How can we make the interaction with authorities efficient? What mistakes can others learn from?
Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is an international non-profit research organisation. In January 2017 SEI was rated as the world's most influential think tank on environmental policy issues in a renowned annual survey made by the University of Pennsylvania. SEI researchers often combine academic publication with policy briefs and stakeholder engagement in their work. They are organised under ten so called initiatives on topics like Behaviour and choice, Climate finance or Producer to consumer sustainability.
The seminar is part of the GMV seminar series on Utilisation and collaboration - stakeholder interaction in research processes.
Lecturer: Johan has previously held positions with the UN system (UNDESA at the UN HQ in NY, WMO in Geneva and FAO in Rome) and has also worked many years at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). He has also a background as a consultant focusing on sustainability and corporate core value processes within both the private and public sector. His academic background is Earth Sciences and his research focused on palaeoclimatology in the Polar Regions. He currently holds an adjunct professorship in international water resources at the Stockholm University, and he was appointed Honorary Doctor at the same university in 2017.
