GSF Webinar: Measuring Governance for Local Development - Experiences from Low- and Middle-Income Countries in Africa and the Middle East

Lecture

The international research programme on Governance and Local Development(GLD)at GU focuses on answering the fundamental question: why are some communities able to provide secure environments, good education, adequate healthcare and other factors that encourage human development when others fail to do so.

A GSF-webinar with Professor Ellen Lust, Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg.

A webinar with Professor Ellen Lust, Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg.

Answering this question requires comprehensive measures of governance at the local level that take into account both state and non-state actors and institutions. GLD has developed the Local Governance Performance Index (LGPI) to meet this need.

Ellen Lust will discuss the processes and challenges met in developing the index, and some key findings to date. Ellen Lust founded GLD in 2013, while she was professor at Yale, and moved it to GU in 2015, when she received a VR International Recruitment Grant. She has undertaken field work in countries like Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Tunisia, Oman, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, and is involved in research collaborations across the globe.
She will also share her experiences and ideas on how to foster research collaborations in low and middle income countries, including in times of a pandemic.

This GSF-webinar is the fourth in a series of webinars/seminars organised by Global Sustainable Futures (GSF). Global Sustainable Futures is a collaboration platform initiated by the Vice Chancellor of GU, Eva Wiberg, and the President and CEO of Chalmers, Stefan Bengtsson. The overall objective of GSF is to promote and facilitate further collaboration between the two universities and colleagues in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
