Water - Supply and Accessibility Challenges

Lecture

Welcome to the first GSF Webinar in 2022 - this time focusing on "Water".

Water is a significant subject both at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. Research, teaching and utilisation around water issues are taking place at many departments and in different education programmes.

Global Sustainable Futures has formed a thematic working group Water to map all water researchers at the two universities with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), Clean Water and Sanitation and then to identify potential research gaps for collaboration.

For the 24 January webinar we have the pleasure to welcome Andreas Lindhe, Associate Professor at Geology and Geotechnics at Chalmers; Sofie Hellberg, Associate Professor at School of Global Studies; and Thomas Pettersson, Associate Professor at Water Environment Technology at Chalmers, and also leader of GSF's "Water" theme.

Andreas Lindhe will share some of his and his colleagues' experiences and new knowledge from a study of managed aquifer recharge in Botswana. The water supply in Botswana is dependent on surface water dams, but water scarcity is a major challenge due to low rainfall and high rates of evaporation. The overall objective has been to investigate how storage of treated surface water in aquifers can improve the water supply security in Botswana. A pre-feasibility study was performed in 2014 and during spring a feasibility study will be finalized.

Sofie Hellberg is an Associate Professor in Peace and Development and is researching water governance with particular focus on issues of power, inequality and distribution as well as the role that water plays in societal development. Her research has been focusing on South Africa and global policies.

The webinar will be moderated by Thomas Pettersson, theme leader within GSF. He is the director of the DRICKS project, a collaboration about drinking water between Chalmers, University of Gothenburg and Swedish municipalities. DRICKS is a framework project consisting of individual research projects with the objective of providing a safe and healthy drinking water.
