News: Apr 26, 2018

Jan Pettersson has been appointed new director of Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. Pettersson works as professor of environmental atmospheric science at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Gothenburg, and also serves as director of the Gothenburg Air and Climate Centre. His new assignment will begin 1 June.

The two heads of Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg have appointed Jan Pettersson as director of the jointly operated Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development. He will succeed Katarina Gårdfeldt, who directed the Centre until the turn of the year.

Pettersson’s research career in atmospheric chemistry, with links to energy research, started long ago, and he also has extensive teaching experience in fields such as air quality control, the climate and environmental chemistry. His research has been applied through air quality assessments both in Sweden and through international projects in Kenya, China and India. He also has thorough experience of cooperation between academia, research institutes, public actors, special interest organisations and business and industry, for example through his current post as director of the Gothenburg Air and Climate Centre.

- I’m really looking forward to contributing to solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time! Sustainability issues will be of central importance in all parts of society, and the Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development is already contributing successfully to the development. Our strong focus on sustainability will continue at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. We are going to support our researchers in their work to find solutions and understand how society and earth are changing. And we will also give our students the knowledge and tools they will need to contribute to a sustainable development of society.

Pettersson will begin his new assignment on 1 June and will serve as centre director on an 80% basis. His contract is for 3 years and can be extended by an additional 3 years. He will continue to work at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology alongside his new position.
