Handels Council for Sustainability is a new initiative at HHGS, the Student Union at the School of Business Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The council consist of representatives from different parts of the student union’s activities and was created to set the agenda within the union. We talked to Olivia Lind, Vice President of HHGS to hear more about the council and the upcoming plans.
We are HCS - Handels Council for Sustainability! The council was founded in the fall of 2020 and sets the agenda for sustainability work within HHGS, the Student Union at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The council is presided over by the Vice President of HHGS with representatives from all parts of HHGS involved in the group. The council meets every third week and also has four different working groups focusing on different aspects of the sustainability framework.
HCS was created to set the sustainability agenda within the union. The purpose is to create a more sustainable union, generate sustainability opportunities for students and become a meeting place where experiences, contacts and knowledge in sustainability can be exchanged. The overall goal is to improve the sustainability at HHGS and in the long run contribute to a much more sustainable union, university, and society.
We are currently working on creating an extensive framework for all aspects of sustainability for the union and our associations, projects, programme sections and companies. The current sustainability work at HHGS consists of an environmental policy focusing mostly on the environmental aspects of sustainability – and we want to expand that! The working groups are all focused on different aspects of sustainability - environmental, social, and economic. We also have a working group specifically focused on a sustainability certification for events and projects. Our plan is to be able to implement this new framework during the year 2021, and in addition to that create loads of opportunities within sustainability for our students.
The step for this year is to put the basics in place for a sustainable union. After that, we also hope to come up with more innovative ideas on how to engage students in sustainability at HHGS, the university and in society.
Are you a student at Handels and passionate about sustainability? The working groups at HCS are open to any and all sustainability-interested students who are looking to make a difference. It is a fantastic opportunity to be part of creating a more sustainable union and faculty and also get easy access to opportunities within sustainability.
