Sustainability Opportunities

– Exploring Sustainability at the Cross-roads of Science and Society

Universities all over the world will need to play a pivotal role in addressing emerging global challenges. The graduate course Sustainability Opportunities – Exploring Sustainability at the Cross-roads of Science and Society is a joint venture by the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers to gather competence in the area of sustainability.

This interdisciplinary and solution-oriented course addresses global and sustainability challenges and features prominent teachers and researchers from both universities.

Dealing with complex sustainability challenges requires new forms of education, research and community engagement. These new forms must support integrative thinking and design, the facilitation of trans-boundary alliances and creative coalitions, acceptance of indeterminacy, emergence and uncertainty, the democratization of knowledge, and a preference for contextual solutions with a planetary conscience. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on the top of the agenda, and will engage a broad variety of actors in both developed and developing countries all over the world.

Course idea

This course will analyze today’s international activities from different perspectives, practices and possibilities of Sustainable Development, and focus on tomorrows innovative and efficient solutions to the major sustainability challenges. This includes perspectives such as: the global to local, technological to societal (incl. lifestyles/ behaviors), and the efficiency to systems change. Key drivers and barriers to change are analyzed, including how the implementation of one solution can affect other options, and the course will focus on identifying solutions for the future. Moreover, the conditions for an emerging science referred to as Sustainability Science are reflected upon and the course will explore sustainability challenges at the crossroads of science and society.

The course has been run in 2016 and in 2018.

Formal host for the course is Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development.
