GU’s Summer School for Sustainability brings together students from all over the world in a generous five-week program of courses and related activities, all with a focus on sustainability issues. The Summer School has a high student completion rate and very positive ratings from participants. Your faculty can now nominate courses for 2024.
The Summer School for Sustainability was launched in a digital format in 2021 and in 2022 it was offered on site in Gothenburg. On average 150 students from international partner universities as well as national students are welcomed to follow one of the offered courses and to participate in the extensive extra-curricular program, that links to GU, the city and the region.
“The aim of the summer school is to offer short term mobility for partner university students as a complement to full term exchange, and an opportunity for students and teachers to engage in internationalisation at home. The summer school has quickly become an important strategic tool in the internationalisation work at the university, not least in relation to existing and potential partner universities around the world”, says Anna Bellomi at the International Centre.
Participating courses are aligned with a structure that blends lectures and course work with extra-curricular- and social activities, all liked by the theme of sustainable development. The aim is to design an attractive range of courses that can attract both Swedish and international students and that showcase the university's breadth and strong sustainability profile. The project leaders are now hoping for participation from more of the University’s faculties for 2024, and they have also worked to make the format more attractive to teachers.
"We want to make it easy for teachers to participate in the summer school, and so we encourage several course leaders or a team of teachers to share the responsibility for a course over the summer. It is also possible to make one of the five weeks digital, and we offer extra support for planning", says Anna Bellomi, who also emphasizes that the teachers who have participated so far find the mix of ages, academic and geographical backgrounds in the student groups stimulating and fun to work with.

Nominated course suggestions will be confirmed with the respective faculty before finally being decided upon by vice-chancellor. All nominating faculties will be notified of the outcome during the month of June 2023. Since all available HST-spaces have not been used in previous years, it is most likely that all nominated courses for 2024 will be approved and made part of the program.
The summer school is made possible by an addition of 27 FTEs (2,3 million SEK) per year in a special quota that is allocated according to the respective internal price tags, rounded up to the nearest integer. Remuneration is calculated according to the same principles as the regular allocations. In addition to this, each participating department is offered an additional 60.000 SEK in a planning contribution to enable the extra planning and development for teachers and administrators that is required.
International Centre is the unit in charge of project management, academic- and social program, and overall administration of the summer school. International Centre collaborate with Campus services, Welcome Services, Service center, The Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development, the University library, the city, region, and other internal and external actors.
