The SDG 8 Initiative

The SDG 8 Initiative is the University of Gothenburg´s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 8 of the 2030 Agenda. The aim is to achieve sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

The University of Gothenburg, as part of the International Association of Universities (IAU) and its Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) Cluster, has been asked to take a lead specifically on SDG 8. Every goal has its lead university, resulting in a global network of universities coordinating different goals.

The SDG 8 Initiative includes participation from eight satellite universities in low- or middle-income countries:

Makerere University, Uganda
Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
University of Nigeria, Nigeria
University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
University of Nairobi, Kenya
University of Concepción, Chile
Universidad de los Andes, Colombia
University of Economics Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam

Collaborating partners also include:

Chalmers University of Technology
Karolinska Institute
The European Network for Education and Training in Occupational Safety and Health, ENETOSH

Strategic focus

The strategic goal of the SDG 8 team is to engage a global community of researchers and practitioners to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all. In particular, the focal areas will be related to the SDG 8 targets, i.e., economic growth, resource efficiency, innovation, work environment and labour markets, and sustainable tourism.

This is done by applied action research and policy interaction that focus on solutions to growth- and work-related challenges through collaboration among researchers and practitioners in local and global contexts. The aim of this project is to mobilize academic work and policy interaction in support of sustainable economic growth, decent work for all, as well as sustainable tourism. The initiative creates a global network for researchers and practitioners who want to interact within the SDG 8 initiative, for example, researchers linked to satellite universities. Through challenge-driven research and policy interaction, collaboration, and education, we want to act so that knowledge is used and thereby come closer to realising SDG 8.

The starting point is that interdisciplinary approaches are a prerequisite for realizing the 2030 Agenda 2030. A critical approach, in an academic spirit, to the 2030 Agenda 2030, the global goals in general and SDG 8 specifically, as well as problematisation around sub-goals, concepts, and formulations must also permeate the SDG 8 initiative.

Global Sustainable Futures and the SDG 8 Initiative

Global Sustainable Futures supports The SDG 8 Initiative with a particular aim to reach its targets through collaboration that involves University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and partners in low- or middle-income countries. Last year, Global Sustainable Futures launched two pilot thematic working groups, one of which is Sustainable Economic Development (SDG 8) and has supported the SDG 8 Initiative financially to enable research syntheses and discussion papers on different targets of sustainable development goal 8.

The SDG 8 Initiative engages several nodes at the University of Gothenburg to address the specific targets of SDG 8. These include Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development, the School of Business, Economics and Law, the Department of Sociology and Work Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, at Sahlgrenska Academy.
