Save the date: Act Sustainable 2022 - Democracy in a Changing Climate!

News: Mar 10, 2022

Get ready for the sustainability week Act Sustainable. Mark 14-18 November in your calendar, the sustainability week at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg is back! Once again, students, researchers, teachers and all other staff will gather for a full week of inspiration, research, and knowledge about sustainable development. The event will take place here in Gothenburg at a campus near you!

Through this year’s theme Democracy in a Changing Climate, we want to increase the understanding of the connections between the social and the ecological climate. How do these areas impact each other and what synergies can be seen in their respective developments in a long-term perspective? What social effect does the climate crisis have, and what social aspects are driving the climate crisis?

How does the lack of, or access to, human rights, democracy, inclusion, and equality affect the climate?

This years theme was chosen with several political events happening during 2022 in mind. For instance the midterm elections in the US, the Swedish general election, and the 20th Party congress in China. On the same day as the theme was decided, President Putin of Russia ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This has of course made issues of democracy, peace, and justice even more pressing and relevant.

The theme page on the Act Sustainable webpage will soon be updated to better reflect the current state of affairs.

The program

The program of Act Sustainable consists of events and other happenings hosted by a number of actors at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. The majority of the program is open for all students and all staff, except the Act Sustainable Research Conference which is exclusive for researchers (including PhD students).

The Research Conference will take place on the mornings of the Act Sustainable week. This year’s lunch program will, just like last year, be hosted entirely by students. Applications to host student-led lunch sessions will open in the fall.

The afternoons of the Act Sustainable week will feature interesting lectures, workshops, and seminars hosted by various actors such as centres, research groups, units and networks at the two universities.
The week will end with our annual mingle and fair where all participants and partners of Act Sustainable are invited.

How to contribute

We are now looking for actors who want to contribute to our afternoon program! We are looking for interesting workshops, lectures and other types of activities related to this year’s theme. The official language of Act Sustainable is English and the program should, as a whole, as far as possible, reflect many different perspectives and academic fields as well as this year’s theme.

We strive to create a program with a multidisciplinary approach where many different students and staff feel welcomed and find interesting activities to participate in. Our goal is that Act Sustainable should be an open-minded arena with low thresholds where discussions about our biggest challenges can take place in a constructive manner.

Are you interested in hosting an event or session during Act Sustainable? Contact Karin Bylund (Karin.bylund@gu.se) right away.
